Endodontics
When bacteria from cavities irreversibly infect the pulp (tooth nerve), it leads to inflammation.
At that point, the tooth nerve must be removed. This is called an endodontic (“inside the tooth”) procedure.
If the inflammation spreads further and affects the bone around the tooth, a granuloma forms, which can be seen as a black shadow on an X-ray. In the case of a granuloma, endodontic therapy must be performed, i.e., the tooth canals must be completely cleaned of infected content and hermetically filled with materials designed for this purpose.
In our clinic, we use the latest techniques for root canal treatment that improve efficiency and speed up the therapeutic process. Most of these endodontic procedures can be completed in one or two visits.
Electroodontometry
To properly treat and fill the root canals, it is very important to precisely determine the length of the canals, for which we use the latest electronic devices. Dr. Maja Kovačević has devoted the majority of her scientific research to studying the effectiveness and applicability of these devices in endodontics. That is why during endodontic therapy in our clinic, we rarely use X-ray radiation, and we minimize the patient's exposure to X-rays to the absolute minimum.
When treating root canals, we use a rubber dam
The rubber dam protects the tooth from:
Saliva
Blood
Bacterial contamination
It also serves as a protective barrier from inhaling or swallowing, and it reduces the possibility of infection transmission between the patient and the dentist, which has become even more relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic.
All of the above, technique, knowledge, and experience, contribute to the very high success rate of endodontic therapy, which has been published in the most renowned global journals (American Journal of Dentistry, Dental Tribune, Roots).
Case Report
The patient was first admitted in 2008 with severe root resorption and a visible fistulous tract. After diagnosis, endodontic therapy was performed to close the defect using MTA cement, which was completed in February 2009.
A follow-up X-ray taken in 2021 confirmed complete healing of the affected area. However, the patient presented with a crown fracture due to trauma.
In 2009, prosthetic rehabilitation was carried out, including the cementation of veneers on the central incisors and the placement of a ceramic crown on the lateral incisor, which had previously undergone endodontic treatment.
Prosthetic work after 12 years, in 2021.

When is root canal treatment necessary?
When bacteria from cavities cause irreversible inflammation of the tooth nerve or when the infection spreads to the bone around the tooth, which can lead to a granuloma. Treatment is necessary to prevent the spread of infection and preserve the tooth.
How is the length of the root canal determined?
The length is precisely measured using electronic devices, allowing for effective treatment and filling of the canal without unnecessary use of X-ray radiation. This method increases safety and reduces the need for additional imaging.
Why is a rubber dam used?
The rubber dam isolates the tooth from saliva, bacteria, and contamination, increasing the safety and effectiveness of the procedure. It also prevents the swallowing or inhalation of materials and reduces the risk of infection transmission between the patient and the dentist
